Do You Know How to Correctly Change Your Smoke Detector?

While we here at All Chores No More love helping our customers with maintenance projects, we always want to make sure our customers are safe. Installing a smoke detector in your home yourself is a quick and easy do-it-yourself project.

How to Change Your Smoke Detector Yourself

Follow these 4 simple steps to ensure the process is done correctly!

  1. Mark drill holes on the ceiling. A smoke alarm should be installed at least 300mm from the closest wall. After marking the correct distance, you can use the base plate bracket to mark where to drill on the ceiling.
  2. Drill holes in the ceiling. Drilling directly into the timber frames if best. If you cannot, you will need to reinforce the drill holes using plasterboard anchors.
  3. Install alarm on the ceiling. Line up the base plate of your smoke alarm with your drill holes, and insert the screws. Insert the battery into the smoke alarm, but do this while you are safely on the ground to avoid injury. Next, attach the alarm into the base plate on the ceiling.
  4. Test your alarm. While this process is simple, it would be pointless if your smoke alarm did not work. Make sure to test your alarm by pressing the test button. Go ahead and do this as soon as you install the alarm so that you will not forget.

This simple project is essential to ensuring the safety of your home and those in it. To make sure your smoke alarm is always in working order, test it often. Make sure the batteries are changed once a year and that the alarm is replaced after ten years. For help with this project or any other project in your home, All Chores No More is here to assist you.
