Spring is a time of renewal, so there’s no better time to do a few maintenance chores to keep your home in tip-top shape!
Here are a few spring home maintenance ideas:
Roof tiles may have fallen off (or been blown off!) by severe or wintry weather--if so, you'll need to have a qualified roofer replace them. Any shingles that have cracked or buckled should be replaced as well. It's a good idea to also replace any tiles that are loose because that means they're likely to fall off the next time a storm rolls in. While you're at it, have the flashing--a thin strip of water-resistant material--of your chimney checked out by the roofer.
Now that the weather is nice, take a walk around your home and scope out any additional damage that Old Man Winter might have caused. This includes taking a peek at caulking around your windows and doors, and weather stripping. Replace any caulk that is damaged or cracking. Replacing weather stripping is also a wise spring home maintenance task and it doesn't cost much--you can get a whole roll of 36 yards for less than 30 bucks.
While many people tend to wait until the leaves have landed in the fall to clean out their gutters, it's a good idea to do it in spring as well. Not only will it give your gutters a clean start to the new season, but while you're up there you'll be able to assess any damage from the winter. Water in the gutters can freeze in winter, forming ice dams that weigh down the gutter and cause damage to not just your gutters but the roof as well, so it's better to find out now rather than waiting for autumn.
